There is nobody greater than Guru - even God's position is second as compared to Guru. Guru is He who gives us both practical and theoretical knowledge of the world and God, and diverts us towards God with His mighty commandments of essence.
It is only with His Grace that our darkness of ignorance gets rooted out and it is alone His Grace with which God manifests Himself in front of us. So there is nothing to pay for His immeasurable Grace and Love even in our eternal lives.
